Jenkintown's own half-square-mile footprint limits the amount of parkland inside the borough, but the surrounding communities more than compensate. Within a short drive or bike ride, residents have access to a substantial trail network, creek-side parkland, and one of the region's best arboretums.
The largest and closest significant green space to Jenkintown. Lorimer Park encompasses 224 acres of woodland in Abington Township, immediately adjacent to the borough's eastern edge. The park has hiking trails through mixed hardwood forest, a tributary of Pennypack Creek running through it, and enough tree cover to feel genuinely remote within walking distance of suburban streets. Popular with dog walkers, trail runners, and families looking for an hour of woods without a long drive.
The Tookany Creek Parkway follows the Tookany Creek through Cheltenham Township, offering a linear trail for cyclists and pedestrians. The path connects neighborhoods along the creek corridor and provides an off-road route toward Philadelphia. A good option for bike commuters and those who want to ride without sharing the road with Route 611 traffic.
The Jenkins Arboretum in Devon, Pennsylvania is named for the Jenkins family — the same Welsh Quaker family that gave Jenkintown its name. The arboretum specializes in native plants, azaleas, and rhododendrons, with particular display strength in spring. It is a free public resource operated by a non-profit and worth the drive during blooming season. The name connection makes it a piece of Jenkintown's own history, physically relocated to Chester County.
Jenkintown proper has several small pocket parks and green spaces scattered through the residential neighborhoods. While none are large destination parks, they provide play areas, benches, and small greenways that maintain the borough's neighborhood feel. The mature street trees throughout the older residential sections are themselves a significant part of the borough's outdoor character — old-growth canopy along streets like Cedar and Summit that changes the feel of the neighborhood from typical suburb to something with genuine depth and shade.
